Of all the ways to tour the Lowcountry’s moss-draped back roads, it doesn’t get more extraordinary than driving an open-aired three-wheeled roadster called a SlingShot.
These unique street-legal vehicles, first introduced by Polaris in 2015, are designed with two wheels in front and one wheel in back, with no roof and no doors. In some states they are classified as motorcycles, but South Carolina considers them “tri-mobiles,” meaning that you only need a regular driver’s license.
You can rent one by the hour from Adventure Rentals of Hilton Head. The company has even mapped out routes to a number of popular destinations, such as Pinckney Island, Old Town Bluffton, Beaufort and Hunting Island. The SlingShot is Bluetooth enabled and can be synced with your phone’s navigation system free of charge.
Because the roadsters are open, it is suggested that you check the weather forecast and be prepared for rain or shine. They strongly encourage eye protection as well as closed-toe shoes and sun protection. And don’t forget the camera!
In addition to a driver’s license, you will need to know how to drive a five-speed manual transmission (you’ll be checked out before renting). You will also need to purchase insurance for the day at a nominal cost, and helmets are required at all times (provided with the rental). There are age and weight restrictions.
Adventure Rentals is located in the Adventure Center at 38 Gateway Circle on Hilton Head. They are open daily.
You don’t have to be a motor head to enjoy this unique adventure. It’s freedom. It’s really fun. And it’s very different (bragging rights free of charge).
