Fishing with a kite seems almost, well, unnatural. What would make you think you could catch a fish swimming underwater with a kite flying in the air? But it works – honestly.
Although it was the ancient Polynesians who figured out this trick, kite fishing is just now growing in popularity as a technique in both inshore and offshore waters as well as from the beach.
It requires a kite with baited hanging drop lines. You launch the kite out over the water and let the bait float near the surface. Watch for the kite to dip, a sure-fire signal that the bait has been taken. Then, just haul in your catch.
Fishing charters that offer kite fishing will provide all the equipment and bait as well as lessons. It may seem a little difficult at first, but with a little patience (and some wind), it will soon add excitement to an already exciting sport.
