Lawton Stables, a 23-acre full service equestrian center located within the Sea Pines Plantation, offers daily guided trail rides through the tranquil Sea Pines Forest Preserve (for those eight years old and older, reservations required), pony rides for kids aged seven and under, and free tours of the small animal farm.
Trail rides are way to entertain a group of people, perhaps a family reunion or company outing. Lawton has even had two marriage proposals on the trails!
Their small animal farm, which is free for everyone, allows you to get up close and personal with some very sweet and friendly creatures – goats, sheep, miniature donkeys, rabbits, chickens, pot-bellied pigs, alpacas and even a deer named Callie.
The pony rides encircle the animal farm and children seven and under are able to take a pony ride on one of several adorable Shetland ponies.
Not to be missed is Harley, a favorite of locals and visitors alike. Harley is an 18.2 hand Clydesdale horse (the kind you see in the Budweiser ads) who hangs around waiting to be petted. He may be very big, but he’s sweet and friendly.
As a full service Equestrian Center, Lawton is home to the International Riding Academy that offers training for horse and rider as well as world class horse boarding facilities. A summer riding camp is also available for experienced junior riders. The Riding Academy’s instructors enjoy training visitors as well as local riders who compete in local, regional and national hunter/jumper shows.
Lawton Stables is also home to the non-profit Wish Upon a Horse Therapeutic Riding Center that provides equine riding therapy for children and adults with special needs, both locals and visitors alike.
