The Heritage Library is devoted to the study and preservation of national and ancestral history. The Foundation operates a history and genealogical library, administers several historical sites from the Colonial and Civil War eras, conducts educational programs and publishes works of historical and genealogical interest.
The library is also responsible for maintaining Fort Mitchel, a Civil War earthworks relic in Hilton Head Plantation,and the antebellum Zion Chapel of Ease, located at the intersection of Mathews Drive and William Hilton Parkway (US 278). Both are open to the public.
Guided history tours are offered of the Zion Chapel of Ease (Fridays) as well as Fort Mitchel (Thursdays). Bike tours of historic sites along Squire Pope Road are available on Wednesdays. The tour schedule is seasonal.
The library is open from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. There is a nominal charge for research for non-members; a limited number of free one-hour genealogy check-up appointments are available.
