One of the most iconic images of the Lowcountry is a fisherman in his bateau throwing a huge mesh net to catch shrimp and bait fish.

So if you want to get a good feel for what the Lowcountry is all about, learn to throw a cast net. This is a wonderful activity for the whole family. Kids love watching a pro drag in a full net.

Learn to Throw a Net

The art of throwing a net has to be taught in person from a professional guide. It’s not something you can learn by sitting in your living room watching “YouTube.” Your best bet is to sign up for lessons with Live Oac Adventures, Outside Hilton Head, or the Coastal Discovery Museum.

You can purchase your own supplies at Bubba’s Cabin Lowcountry Outfitters.

Fishing License Regulations

Nets can be cast from shore, piers or boats. In South Carolina, you need a salt water fishing license to cast net unless you are with a licensed captain or at a licensed pier. For further information, contact the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources at (888) 714-3611.
