A visit to the Port Royal Sound Maritime Center is a must, the “go to” place for discovering the Port Royal Sound.
The Port Royal Sound Foundation’s mission is to preserve the Port Royal Sound for the environmental, cultural and economic well-being of our area.
Located on the Chechessee River, the Maritime Center has exhibits that appeal to all ages, from a life-sized Megalodon jaw to a 3,000-gallon aquarium featuring local marine life.
Here you will also see a life-size replica of the albino dolphin “Carolina Snowball” and her son “Sonny Boy,” both of whom once swam the waters of Port Royal Sound.
The Maritime Center features work from local artists as well as photos and artifacts that help tell the story of how the Sound has influenced our rich history and culture.
The Maritime Center offers programs and events for the whole family! A full calendar of events can be found on the Port Royal Sound Foundation website or their Facebook page.
The Maritime Center is located between Bluffton and Beaufort at 310 Okatie Highway (US 170) at the south end of the Chechessee River Bridge. It is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free.
