Heyward House Museum & Welcome Center Website
Company Description:
Located within Bluffton’s National Register Historic District, The Heyward House Museum and Welcome Center offers guided tours conducted by volunteer docents who explain the background of the house and place it in context of the greater historical setting of Bluffton. The house also serves as Bluffton’s official Welcome Center.
The Heyward House is a well-preserved example of Carolina farmhouse architecture. It was built about 1841 and is one of the eight homes to survive the Union Army’s occupation of Bluffton in 1863.
Behind the house stand two outbuildings. A slave cabin has been restored and decorated with replica furnishings and household items typical of slave quarters. The original summer kitchen can be seen, but it is not yet open to the public.
Admission to the house itself is free as is all information they provide on Old Town Bluffton. Docent-led tours of the house are available for a nominal fee (children 10 and under free).
The house is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. year around.
Guided tours of Bluffton’s National Register Historic District include a 45-minute tour of the Heyward House and grounds, and 75-minute walk through the Historic District. Reservations are required for these tours.
